August Meeting

Members will recall that we have been unable to use the computer room at Cantell for August meetings on a number of occasions in the past because in the school holidays various maintenance jobs are carried out which have made the room unavailable or unusable when we arrived. This year however there is another person in charge of the letting and we were assured that the room would be available as usual.

The last newsletter reported that we had been told that in fact this year the room would be available as usual. Accordingly the usual attendees arrived for the meeting. The room was indeed available to us but the computers were not as our passwords would not work. A lady came to the room and found that by entering her password they were available but she was not permitted to allow us to use the computers using this password. A pleasant hour was passed with members chatting to each other and the meeting closed early. The next day Bryan contacted the school to complain and was given their sincere apologies and it was explained that our password had been put on hold during August and that they had forgotten to re-install it for us. We do not have to pay for the use of the room for that evening and the room for our September meeting will not have to be paid for either.

We are all sorry about this but mistakes do occur and the staff at Cantell are very helpful to us so we accept their apologies with grace.

I struggle every month to find anything to write about so:-
Contributions to the newsletter would be very welcome.

Problem Section

I purchased a Seagate 80 Gb external hard drive some months ago. I purchased it because it was on special offer and although I have plenty of space on my internal hard drive I thought it would be useful as a backup unit. The drive was simple to install and worked well at first but not now. If I attempt to write to the drive I am told that the drive is full and that I should remove files to make room. In fact there is hardly anything on the drive. I can access the drive and use anything that I have already written to it but cannot write anything new to it. Another problem I have is that my computer often crashes if I attempt to write to a disc in the recording drive. Bryan has spoken about the same problem that I have in this respect and I wonder if the problem is caused by an update to Windows. I no longer have the inclination to start investigating the problem myself so I will be taking my computer in for service shortly.

The Future Of The Club

We have enough cash in hand to keep the club going, at lease for some time yet. Another local computer club has advertised and I have been in touch with one of the organisers. Apparently they do not have a membership and anyone is welcome to their meetings. The club seems to be quite active but very informal and the person I spoke to was very impressed with the way our club is run and the facilities we have. I suggested the possibility of an amalgamation of the two clubs and the person I spoke to seemed very interested but I have heard nothing from him since. Perhaps he has lost my telephone number. I will leave it for a while and then contact him again.

(Special thanks to Ken for writing the newsletter this month as he had a cataract operation last week and I know he found it difficult. — Bryan)
