Membership

It is nearly time to take stock of things regarding the future of the club. Membership has dropped to an all time low with only a handful of members attending our meetings.

It seems few are interested in our meetings in spite of the fact that in the past we have tried to provide something of interest every month. After a meeting last year, members said that they would be quite happy to come to the meetings and chat among themselves and help others if needed. A few regulars attend every meeting and say that they are quite happy but most members do not attend at all. We have always had a few members that seldom if ever come to meetings. We have been told that they like to receive the newsletter and to be able to keep in touch. This is fine and we are flattered to receive their support but we do need a few more to come to the meetings to help with the rent of the room. Our general expenses are not high and I have been doing a few calculations. Half of the ten pounds annual fee goes in the expense of the newsletter (postage and stationery). Hire of the room at present is £18 per evening but likely to increase. The average attendance is now only about 6 although hopefully more will attend in the winter. Members pay £2 for each meeting they attend. I calculate that we lose roughly £3.50 per meeting at present.

Fortunately we have a reserve of funds built up over the period of better times so we can carry on for a while as yet, if members wish us to do so. But do they?

I am continually being asked computer questions by non members. If they joined the club and only had help for one question a meeting they would still have good value as well as good companionship.

It seems more and more people are buying computers and then struggling to use them. Many attend courses but still need help. If you hear of such a person, tell him or her about the club.

I had an email from someone who was very enthusiastic about coming to the club. Apparently he was quite competent with the use of his computer but needed a little help and was very keen to come to our last meeting.

It has been our policy in the past to let anyone come to one of our meetings and not to charge them for their first attendance. Unfortunately some have taken advantage of this by getting a great deal of help and never attending a gain.

On this occasion, the interested party was told of our subscription rates. He did not attend the meeting he was so keen to come to.
