Members may recall that I (Ken) mentioned that I had bought a new Cannon Scanner back in June 2004. The scanner had been introduced for £179 but I had bought it from PC World a few months after for £99. I was very satisfied with the scanner, that is until it packed up about a year later. PC World were very good and exchanged the scanner for a later model at no extra charge.
I have been very satisfied with the scanner, that is until last week when this one broke down as well. Again PC World were very good and offered to replace the scanner with any other stock model of the same price or with a price adjustment. An assistant showed me what was available but there was nothing to compare with the scanner I had. I was offered a refund but insisted on either a replacement for the same model or I was quite prepared to wait while mine was repaired. A few days later I was informed that my scanner was ready for collection. I have not tried it as yet but presume that it will be satisfactory. Full marks though for PC World for excellent service.
I seem to be very unlucky with my purchases. A few weeks ago I purchased a 5ft fluorescent fitting from B & Q. After fitting it I found that it did not work and on inspection I discovered a live wire floating about inside the case. There was no way of connecting the wire so I returned the fitting to B & Q. On fitting the replacement I found that the starter holder was broken and the starter would not stay in. Back to B & Q again for a replacement. This time on unpacking I found the tube broken. The fourth fitting seems to be OK.
A fuse unit also bought at B & Q proved to be faulty as well.
My final problem (I hope) has been with my old Pentium 2 computer. The computer was kicking around so I decided to use it as a database for the recordings I am making. My main computer always being in use. When trying to transfer a file by floppy to my main computer I found that the 3.5" drive was not working. A second hand drive was purchased but this did not work either.
The drive was recognised but I could not write to it. Bryan Coleman then loaned me a new drive to try but this would not work either. In desperation I tried formatting a disk in the drive. This worked and the disc was able to be read. It seems that the drive will not recognise any disk formatted in my other computer. Ah well, I learn something every day.
I help a little with the above society, mainly with their computer and photographing their many events.
Last month I brought some forms to the club at the request of the local manager of the Alzheimer's Society. The forms were for signatures to a protest at the withdrawal of a drug that can give great benefit to sufferers. Not all sufferers benefit however and as the drug is expensive the government will not finance the use of it.
One member very kindly collected signatures. I will bring forms again to the club this month but will not distribute them. Any member wishing to assist by collecting a few signatures can collect a form from me.
Protest marches will be taking place all over the country and a local march is being held on November the 17th.
As membership renewal time approaches it is noticeable that quite a few members never attend meetings these days and may feel that membership is not worth while. Please think about it carefully, the subscriptions are very low and help keep us going.
Remember that we are here when needed.
