At our May meeting I mentioned that I had a problem with my computer. Members will know that I do a lot of recording for various music clubs and usually have no problems. Lately however, I have had a serious problem with my recording drive. The drive works about 25% of the time the rest of the time it crashes and the following notice appears and the only thing I can do is to switch the computer off at the mains.
A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER. IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU'VE SEEN THIS STOP ERROR SCREEN, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. I have asked several knowledgeable people if they can suggest a remedy for the problem but no one seems to have a solution, the common ones being replace the drive and re-format the hard disk. I could not accept either of these drastic measures. I had thought of re-installing the drive software but as it worked perfectly on occasions I do not see the need for this. I finally telephoned Evesham the makers of my computer. After waiting about a quarter of an hour on the phone I was eventually told that they would phone me back in half an hour, the time then being 4.30 pm. Of course they didn't. In exasperation I decided to send them a strong letter of complaint the next day but to their credit, they did telephone the next morning, luckily I was in. The person at Evesham was very polite and most helpful. Apparently he knew all about the problem which has been caused by a Windows update and he has promised to send me details of what to do. It is not a question of a driver but an alteration to the BIOS. This was about a week ago and I have not heard from him yet but I live in hope. It occurs to me that he may have sent me an email although he did not ask for my address. Earlier this evening I tried to look at my emails of which there are about 40 waiting for me. About the first half a dozen downloaded quickly (all adverts) and then things came to a halt. I tried to read the emails in the Virgin Webmail but it would not accept my password although this was changed at the club a couple of meetings ago and I made a very careful note of it. In exasperation I attempted to change the password but all I got was "This sight not available, try again later"
I also get another error message come up when I start my computer stating that a file has been deleted although everything seems to work alright. Evesham also have a solution for this and will talk me through it when I have the drive problem resolved.
I never seem to have any luck when I try to do a particular thing on the internet, this is why I dislike it so much. My time is limited and I don't want to waste it messing about trying to use the internet. It is easy enough to surf the web but I always seem to get into trouble every time I try to do something specific. Another gripe is when I go to use my computer in the limited time I have, I switch on and there is a message waiting for me stating that there is an update to my Anti Virus software. Very necessary I know but all I want to do is to use the damn computer.
