Medical News Update

My medical problem seems to have settled, at least for the time being.

During my period of sickness things have got behind a bit at home and I have been working very hard to catch up. My large garden suffered for a time but it is OK now. Why do I mention this? Well as you know I had been running the club for over 16 years mostly by myself although I did get a little help from a few members. For the last three years Bryan Coleman has taken over most of the work which has enabled me to concentrate on other things. A lot of my time is taken up doing work for various music societies which involves a lot of time on my computer.

Bryan always gives me a reminder about a week before the newsletter goes out and I am amazed at how quickly the time goes by these days. It seems that as soon as one newsletter goes out I have to try and think up something for the next one. Were it not for Bryan I probably would have missed a few deadlines. Thank you Bryan.

Computer Fair

I try to get to the Computer Fair held at Southampton frequently. There is always something I need.

I am amazed at some of the items on offer. Recordable CD's at £12 per 100 when a short time ago I was paying £1 each for them.

My grand daughter purchased a very nice lap top for £150 recently. Not the latest of course but plenty good enough for her school work. I purchased a new carrying case for her laptop for £4.

This last Sunday they were selling Pentium II computers with a CD and a reasonable size hard drive for £35 complete with monitor.

Very nice 14in. monitors were on sale for £25.

The fairs are usually held on the last Sunday of the month at the Novotel hotel although I think they are changing to every other month.

Useful Tips?

Following my tip last month about changing the case in Word documents, several members contacted me to say that they had tried the Shift F3 method and that it worked fine for them. A couple demonstrated the fact at the last meeting.

I tried again on my computer later and it does not work for me, at least not on my main computer, It does work on an old second computer that I have.

The problem would seem to be that my main computer has a cordless keyboard and mouse.

The tip would seem only to work with MS Word and does not work in MS Publisher.

Go on, prove me wrong again.

Contributions to the Newsletter

At the last meeting I was given several items of interest that I thought would be ideal for the newsletter. I was also given a very humorous poem that I included in the newsletter in its draft form.

After printing a copy of the newsletter I felt a little uneasy about the contribution. I felt that it would be all right for the few club members that we have but as the newsletter goes out on the internet I might run into trouble over copyright.

I held up the newsletter until I had taken advice. The advice I received was that I might well run into difficulties over copyright. It's a pity but I had to withdraw the poem.

If members do wish to help me with contributions, please ensure that the material is original. I am sure we have all had problems that we have experienced and subsequently solved and these may well be of interest and help to other members.

IF YOU CAN TALK ABOUT OR DEMONSTRATE ANYTHING
PLEASE LET ME KNOW

This meeting notice/newsletter, was based on that produced by Ken Miles, and sent by snail mail, to members of the SPCUC a few days before each monthly meeting. Comments about the club's web pages, to the webmaster.
