Membership

I am very pleased to report that all members have re-joined for 2009. Please accept my sincere thanks for all of your support. I am quite aware that I do very little these days and that this is probably the reason for the decline of this once great club. Without member's support the club would have to close. Thankfully we do have cash in hand and we can look forward to the club continuing to operate for some time yet, probably for several years.

I would particularly like to thank Bryan Coleman who has taken over much of the work that the club entails, Nigel King who publishes our newsletter on the internet and is always on hand to help when needed and Reg Featherstone who, although unable to come to meetings these days, always keeps in touch.

Colden Common Computer Club

I am quite aware that the decline of the club is, to a large extent, down to me. I am afraid that I am not as active as I used to be and I have not kept pace with the computing interests of the public at large. This brings me to the latest information I have regarding our attempt to amalgamate with the Colden Common Computer Club. A meeting with some of their members took place some time ago to discuss the benefits of the two clubs joining. The Colden Common club is quite active and has a healthy membership. The club meets once a month as we do and seems to be quite informal, the members being happy with things as they are. The Colden Common club do not enjoy the facilities that we do at Cantell and it was thought that this would appeal to them. We do have quite a healthy amount of cash in hand which we were willing to throw in to help with any venture that a combined club may have found desirable.

Bryan has attended a few of the Colden Common club meetings which are well attended. I understand that they have several talks already planned for this year. They are fortunate in that they do have members who are or have been employed in computing and this gives them the opportunity of drawing on their knowledge and experience to give a talk.

It would seem that members of the Colden Common club are mainly interested in the internet but in spite of this have no particular interest in the internet facility we have at Cantell. The fact that we do have some cash in hand has no particular interest to the Colden Common club as they have no need of it, their expenses being minimal.

I have to report therefore that there is no point in the two clubs joining but we will keep in touch and welcome each other to our respective meetings.

The Usual Chat

I seem to have got over most of the problems I have been experiencing with my computer. I have had to return my computer six times to get things working properly. I must say that the company that did the original work on it have been very helpful. The last problem I had experienced was that help files controlled by Windows were not working after it had been re-installed. At the last meeting Nigel found a site that offered a solution to this problem, unfortunately it did not work. The local computer store then provided a fix which they said would install the missing file but this did not work either. I finally collected my computer from them and most help files now work - but not all. I am tired of carting my computer around so I will leave it at that.

One problem that I still have left is that I cannot record a video to my PC in any program. Win TV was recently installed and worked perfectly for a while but now an error notice comes up and I am unable to record. I do not have the time to mess around with other programs trying to get them to work. I am on my own these days and have more that I can cope with in the house and garden and I like to spend any free time playing golf.

I have been on the internet (wonder of wonders) and sent an email to Hauppauge, the publishers of the software. I have received a confirmation of receipt of my email and hopefully they will be able to sort the problem out for me.

IF YOU CAN TALK ABOUT OR DEMONSTRATE ANYTHING

This meeting notice/newsletter, was based on that produced by Ken Miles, and sent by snail mail, to members of the SPCUC a few days before each monthly meeting. Comments about the club's web pages, to the webmaster.
