Since our last meeting, most members have either rejoined or intimated that they will be rejoining. It is gratifying that in spite of our difficulties, we can rely on most members to continue to support the club. I know of many clubs such as golf clubs, table tennis clubs, etc. that are struggling to maintain membership. One reads in the newspapers about young people in gangs hanging around outside shops causing trouble because they say there is nothing for them to do. There is of course plenty for them to do if they take an interest in something. In fact it is because there is plenty to do for those that take an interest in computing, that we struggle to maintain the club. Young people get plenty of opportunity to learn computer skills at school and so we do not attract them. Hopefully, because Joan Pressey has published the club on Radio Solent, we may get an influx of members. Thank you Joan.
A letter has been received from a member who has taken the time and trouble to make several suggestions regarding the running of the club. The member has stated that he does not see any use in spending much time in demonstrating and teaching software. We have in fact discovered this and it is the reason that we no longer meet at Wyvern. Anyone wishing to show a program is more than welcome but I know how soul destroying it is to spend a considerable amount of time in preparation to find only a handful of members turn up. The member has made other suggestions for presentations but these have recently been covered at our meetings.
The member states that he is worried about the structure of the club and cites that of very large organisations. I feel that this is a valid point and I will be pleased to hear other members views on this. Over the years I have requested assistance on numerous occasions but this was not forthcoming until two and a half years ago when Bryan Coleman took over the responsibility for printing and distributing the newsletters. Since then he has also taken over the accounts from me which has been an enormous help. I know that I can also rely on Nigel King and Joan Pressy for assistance when required. It is true that we do not have an Annual General Meeting with election of officers but we do produce accounts, a copy of which is available to all members. Believe me it has been a real struggle over the years to get anyone to assist me at all let alone to serve on a committee, even in the days when we had close on fifty members. I do agree that I have lost some of my drive and would welcome anyone who would take over the job of organising meetings. Is there anyone out there? I will raise the matter at the meeting on Thursday and members views will be welcome. Anyway I do very much appreciate the interest that the member has taken and I have thanked him accordingly.
A Lady left it rather late to buy a turkey for Christmas. Visiting her butcher she asked for a bird. The butcher had only one left which he showed the lady. Have you a bigger one the lady asked. The butcher went to the back room and knocked the bird about a bit to make it look bigger. That's better the lady said but have you got one stuffed. The butcher went to the back room again and stuffed the bird and then presented it to the customer. That's fine said the lady. I'll take all three.
